Another of Cedar county's rapidly disappearing old settlers answered the final summons last Saturday when Peter Keegan of Wynot passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Hoese, of this city. The deceased was one of the oldest pioneers of this county and was highly respected by all who knew him. The funeral was held at Wynot on Monday and was very largely attended in spite of the almost impassable condition of the roads.
Interment was made in the Bow Valley cemetery. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends in their great loss.
Peter Keegan, Sr., or Grandpa Keegan, as he was familiarly called by all who knew him, died on Saturday, Mar. 15th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Hoese, at Hartington, Cedar county, Nebraska, at the age of 84 years and three months.
Peter Keegan was born in Monaghan, Ireland in the year 1828, coming to the United States at the age of 15 years, and settling with a sister and brother-in-law at Madison, Wis. in '44. He was united in marriage to Mary Katherine Young on April 18th, 1857. To this union eight children were born three having preceded him to the unseen world. The deceased children are Mrs. T, H. Hough, Springfield, S. D., died Aug. 2, 1909; John Keegan, St. James, Neb., died March 20, 1873 and Chas. Keegan, St. James, died January 14, 1872.
The living children are James and Francis Keegan and Mrs. D. F. Crouch of Wynot; Mrs. Henry Hoese of Hartington, Nebr. and Peter Keegan, Jr. of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado. His wife died January 18, 1890.
