Prosecuting Attorney Matthews today filed a first degree murder information in circuit court against Elmer Huff, 50, farmer who professed religion a month ago and confessed this week to slaying Henry Mayes, 22, on May 24, 1904.
Huff voluntarily presented himself to Matthews Tuesday. "He said the matter had preyed on his mind for thirty-one years, and that on professing religion, he determined to clear his conscience," the prosecutor asserted. The slaying was the outgrowth, Matthews said, of a neighborhood argument over ownership of a dog. Huff, then a boy of 18, ambushed Mayes as the latter returned from a trip to town. Both Huff and his father, Andrew, now dead, were arrested at the time and charged with the murder, but were not brought to trial because the case was dismissed for lack of evidence.
Both denied the crime at the time. Under Missouri law, a murder charge is never outlawed by the statute of limitations.

Elmer Huff, 50-year-old farmer, is in jail here on a first degree murder charge following a voluntary confession, according to authorities, to the killing of Henry Mayes, farm youth shot from ambush 31 years ago today. Huff and his fa ther, Andrew Huff, were charged with the crime shortly after it was committed, but the case was dis missed because of lack of evidence. "Huff came to me last Tuesday," Prosecuting Attorney Thomas A. Matthews said, "and Sheriff Roy Presnell and I listened to his story, the strangest I've ever heard." Matthews said Huff related he had been so disturbed over the kill ing that he could not sleep. Trouble between the Huffs and Mayes arose over a crop dispute, according to Matthews' account of Elmer Huffs story. The families had formerly been close friends. Huff's father and Mayes, then 22 years old, became violently angry during the argument and Huff, then 18, sided with his father. Two days before the killing Elmer Huff saw Mayes ride, by on his way to town. The prosecutor quoted Huff as saying he hid in a thicket and, armed with a shotgun, shot Mayes as he rode homeward on May 24, 1904. Huff and his father were arrested shortly after the shooting, bound over for trial on murder charges and informations were filed against them in Circuit Court. The case was dismissed after a number of delays, due to lack of evi dence, and went unsolved.

• Elmer Andrew Huff died at his home near Doe Run at the age of 58 years, and was laid to rest in the Doe Run cemetery, Tuesday afternoon. Some eight or ten years ago. Mr. Huff broke into the news, in a sort of sensational way, following his confession of his killing a neighbor some 30 years before, when a young man. According to the story at that time, young Huff had a grievance against a neighbor and hid along the road at night. When the neighbor came along horseback, he shot and killed him.
The killing remained a mystery until the early 1930s, when Huff finally confessed his deed to members of the dead man's family and to officers.
Huff was taken to the State Hospital at Farmington for observation and later was sentenced to a term in the state penitentiary upon his plea of guilty. He served a portion of his time and was later released. Huff returned to his home and lived a good life to the time of his death. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Farmington and was thought well of in his community.

Last Wednesday morning the dead body of Henry Mayes was found by his brother-in-law, Mr. Morris, in the middle of the Farmington and Pilot Knob road, about three miles from Iron Mountain. There were ten buckshot in his body - four entering just above the heart, five near the right nipple and one in the right arm. The dead man had a plow share in his arms at the time he was assassinated, which gave evidence of having been struck by several shot.
Word was brought to Farmington soon after the body wns found, and the authorities not being able to communicate with Coroner Evans at Bonne Terre, Squire Wm H Young was sent to the place to conduct an inquest, and the jury returned a verdict that deceased came to his death from gunshot wounds inflicted by a gun in the hands of some unknown person.
Nothing was elicited in the testimony that deceased had had trouble with any one. He was a peaceable young farmer, generally liked by his neighbors, and everybody spoke of him as being a good, hard-working man who attended strictly to his own business. He was but 22 years old and had been married only about five months. His young wife has the sympathy of all in the sorrow that has come into her life through this cowardly tragedy.
