Mother of famous pioneer preacher, Rev. Peter Cartwright. She had two illegitimate children with Dr. Edmund Wilcox, a wealthy plantation owner. She married Peter Cartwright, Sr., a Revolutionary soldier, February 27, 1787, at Amherst County, Virginia. One of the Wilcox sons became a minister, and the other son was hung for murder, (many say he was framed). Married, Peter Cartwright, Sr., and then moved to Kentucky. Had three children by Peter Cartwright. She died at the home of her daughter-in-law, Sophia White Wilcox, wife of the son who was hung for murder. Rev. Peter was the only child to survive his mother. Both his sisters had died before Christiaan. Not much is known about Christiaan. Rev. Peter wrote in his biography, saying his mother was an orphan and never mentions anything about her for the rest of his life. We do know that she was his mother as they are listed together in the court records for Peter Sr.'s will. Also, Rev. Peter Cartwright was born after she married his father, which Rev. Peter never mentioned proving he was the son of Christiaan Garvin and Peter Cartwright, Sr.
Court documents prove she was a servant in Dr. Edmund Wilcox's home. She may have been black or mulatto. Dr. Wilcox left money in his will for the care of her and both boys. He finally married and died shortly after the birth of a child. His new and only wife contested the will, and poor Christiaan lost the court case and received nothing, along with two others who also lost their cases.

- [S6766] Find a Grave: GAINES Frances Cartwright 1789-1876, Frances Gaines Cartwright.
Frances Gaines Cartwright, wife of pioneer preacher, Rev. Peter Cartwright.
Daughter of Robert Gaines. Born 1789, Charlotte County, Virginia. Died sitting in a pew while attending Sunday church services, 1876, at Cartwright Township, Pleasant Plains, Sangamon County, Illinois.
Written By Carl Sandberg About Her Death
Can bare fact make the cloth of a shining poem?
In Sangamon County, Illinois, they remembered how
The aged widow walked a mile from home
To Bethel Chapel
Where she heard the services and was called on
"To give her testimony," rising to speak freely, ending
"The past three weeks have been the happiest of
All my life, I am waiting for the chariot."
The Pastor spoke the benediction, the members rose
And moved
Into the aisles towards the door, and looking back
They saw the widow of the famous circuit rider
Sitting quiet and pale in an inviolable dignity
And they heard the pastor: "The chariot has arrived."
