Sir George Calvert - British Statesman. He was Secretary to Robert Cecil, Earl of Sailsbury, and in 1609, Member of Parliament for Bossiney. Because of his conversion to Catholicism and his support for the Spanish marriage, he was distrusted by Parliament and gave up his offices of state in 1625, accepting the barony of Baltimore and large grants of land in Ireland. In 1621, he had established a small settlement in Newfoundland which he called Avalon and visited in 1627. However, because of disputes and a unsuitable climate he left Avalon for Virginia but was refused permission to settle unless he took the oaths of alligiance and supremacy. He returned to England, dying on 15 April 1632 before a new concession was secured.
