Alonzo Mayberry was born December 10, 1847 in Lima, Ohio. His parents were William and Hannah (Shannon) Mayberry. Alonzo was the fourth of nine children. His brothers and sisters were: James Harvey Mayberry, Catharine (Mayberry) Guffy, Nancy Jane (Mayberry) Breeling, William M. Mayberry, Mary M. Mayberry, Charlotte Mayberry, Arvilla (Mayberry) Evans, and Theophilus Mayberry.
On February 4, 1864, at the age of 17, Alonzo enlisted in the Union Army at Lima, Ohio. He served in Company B, 184th Ohio Infantry and was honorably discharged September 20, 1865. Alonzo married Katharine Hardzog September 24, 1868. They had two children: Chester and Hallie (Mayberry) Schade. Katharine died in March of 1877 in Ohio.
Hallie was born February 5, 1871 and married George Schade. Hallie died in 1955 and is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Glenwood, Iowa.
Alonzo remarried November 29, 1879 to Philura (Lewis) Cribley. Philura was born December 25, 1842 in Allen County, Ohio. Her parents were Martin and Mary Lewis. Philura's first marriage was to Amos Cribley. Amos was killed in an accident early in their marriage.
Alonzo and Philura had three children born to their union:
Florence Bernice Mayberry was born July 26, 1879 in Beavers Dam, Oregon. She married Reuben N. Ross on October 26, 1898. She died February 26, 1954 and Reuben died February 18, 1970. They are both buried in the Glenwood Cemetery. Their children are: Mabel (Ross) Yates, Lonnie, Edwin, and Ruby (Ross) Watson.
Lela Blanche Mayberry was born August 2, 1881 in Delphos, Ohio. She married Charles W. Burson on August 13, 1899 in Glenwood, Iowa. Their children are: Denton, Philura, Amber, Hazel, Charles, Freda and June. Charles died May 19, 1948 in Glenwood, Iowa. Blanche died April 7, 1980 in Glenwood.
Grover was born August, 1884.
Alonzo and Philura brought their family to Mills County from Allen County, Ohio by covered wagon in 1881. They farmed until they moved into Glenwood in 1904. Philura died November 26, 1931 in their home on South Locust Street in Glenwood. Alonzo then moved to the farm home of his daughter, Bernice Ross, southeast of Glenwood.
Alonzo died at the age of 87, one of the last three remaining veterans of the Civil War in Mills County. Submitted by Ramonyca Howard

After many weeks of illness the death angel crossed the threshold of the Alonzo Mayberry home in this city Thursday night and claimed the spirit of the wife and mother. Thus has passed another beloved pioneer of this community. The body was taken to the Raynor Funeral Home and funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Glenwood Christian church with Rev. J. Irving Brown in charge. Music for the service was furnished by Martha McDole, Mrs. Carmen Altekruse, Guy Mayberry and Tom White with Elsie Evans at the piano. The flower ladies were Erma Sawyers, Margaret Knoffler, Ruby Watson, and Freda Burson. The pallbearers were Grover Mayberry, Roy Mayberry, Chester Mayberry, Durward Mayberry, Ernest Schade, Roy Schade, Dent Burson, Chas. Burson, Lonnie Ross and Edwin Ross. The body was laid to rest in the Glenwood cemetery.
Philurah Lewis was born in Allen County, Ohio, December 25, 1842 and departed this life November 26, 1931, at the age of 88 years 11 months and one day.
On November 27, 1871, she was married to Alonzo Mayberry and to them were born three children, two daughters and one son, Mrs. R. N. Ross, Mrs. C. W. Burson and G. C. Mayberry, all of Glenwood, and two stepchildren, who also survive her, Mrs. G. C. Schade of Glenwood and C. A. Mayberry of Gage, Oklahoma.
She came from Allen County, Ohio, to Iowa by wagon in 1881, settling east of Glenwood on a farm. They have lived in and near Glenwood for 50 years. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, two brothers, five children, 23 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
She was for many years a valued member of the Christian church of Glenwood. She was a woman devoted to her home and her family. She leaves the memory of a life of unselfishness lived for others and truly her children and grandchildren may rise up and call her blessed.
