Nettie L. Sykes, 90, of Rifle passed away April 27, 2009 at E. Dene Moore Care Center. Nettie was born June 4, 1918 in Buster, Colorado to Joseph E. & Bramley Lee (Price) Cummings. She married Floyd Sykes in Syracuse, Kansas in 1946. Nettie’s teaching career started in 1944 and spanned 36 years. She taught in schools in Villegreen, Las Animas, Kim and Rifle, Colorado and in Dillon, Montana. She retired in 1980 from Rifle High School after moving from Dillon, Montana in 1960. After retirement Nettie and Floyd did lots of traveling, boating and fishing. They made beautiful wood decorations and furniture. Nettie enjoyed her flowers, music, and had other hobbies such as knitting & photography. Nettie is survived by her son Mel (Sandy) Rose of Salida; daughter Verna (Ed) Chamberlain of Rifle; sister Nina McQuiston of Grand Junction; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd and her son Kenneth. A viewing is planned for Thursday, April 30 from 9 – 10 am at the Rifle Funeral Home, Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am with interment following immediately at Rose Hill Cemetery in Rifle.
