A man and woman were burned to death and four others injured when flames swept a second-floor apartment at 156 West Third South Boston, during a gay party at 8:42 last night. The dead were identified at City Hosiptal as Mrs. Helen Vyse, 41, of 885 East Broadway, and John Antonelli, 45, of 27 West Fifth both of South Boston. Held for treatment of smoke inhalation were Mrs. Gertrude Fitzgerald, 41, of 158 West Third, her twin sister, Mrs. Muriel McNeil of 373 West Second, Mrs. Lillian Joyce, 42, of 340 Broadway, and Thomas Mellon, 77.
The fire was in Mellon's apartment. It was touched off by an explosion in a kitchen oil burner, according to District Chief William Jeffers.
The dwelling is a three-story wooden duplex tenement at Nos. 154-156, near The first two floors at No 154 are occupied by Mr and Mrs Joseph Farrell and their eight children, six of whom were home at the time. Robert Rogers, 50, and his 9-year-old daughter live on the first floor at 156. The third floors are vacant.
Farrell pulled Mrs McNeil unconscious from Mellon's smoke-filled apartment, and helped police rescue Mrs. Fitzgerald.
Firemen from Ladder 18 and Engine 1. brought out Mellon and Mrs Joyce and recovered the two bodies.
