- [S9917] Find a Grave: KJAR Rolland 1932-2016, Rolland “Ron” Kjar.
Rolland W. Kjar died Aug. 26 in St. Charles, Missouri. Born in Lexington, Nebraska, July 21, 1932, to William C. and Esther Kjar. His family moved to Bozeman where he attended and graduated from Holy Rosary High School. Always interested in Rulers of the world, he entered in the 'I speak for Democracy' contest and won 3rd in the State. After high school he worked his way and paid for his education at Gonzaga University. While there he served as campaign manager for Estes Kefaver in 1956. After graduation he taught one year at MSU, getting another teaching job in Little Rock, Arkansas. Coming home for the summer he drove through St. Charles, Missouri. He stopped to let his Great Dane Knut out for a run, at the Duchesne High School. Knut ran into the open door of the High School and cornered the principal, Fr. John Hickel, which ended in Ron accepting a position at Duchesne. Ron taught American History, Political Science, Economics and Western Civilization for college credit until his retirement in 2007.
Despite being a memorable teacher for five decades, Ron was best known for starting and moderating Duchesne Key Club, a service organization affiliated with Kiwanis. During his long leadership of the group, Ron helped guide over 1,000 high school 'Key Clubbers,' inspiring them as to the importance of serving others. Due to his influence, the Duchesne Key Club has regularly been recognized as one of the top Key Clubs in the country. Ron was awarded the Key of Honor (the highest recognition possible for a club leader) in 1995. Ron also served as Golf coach at Duchesne, where the team won three state championships during his tenure. He also taught hi Key Clubbers the art of gourmet cooking.
Ron was a parishioner at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. He was an ardent Republican and served as chairman of the St. Charles County Republican Party and a two-time member of the Electoral College. Ron was a lifetime member of the St. Charles County Noonday Kiwanis Club. In 1998, the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce presented Ron with the Lifetime Distinguished Service Award for the service to the community.
Ron is survived by a brother Lawrence (Carole) Kjar of Davis, California, and three sisters Alice Miller and Mary Ellen Pitt of Bozeman, Montana and Carol (Don) Halseth of Lansing, New York, and several nieces and nephews
