Joseph January Shy, 74, a veteran of both World War I and World War II, died at 1 o'clock this morning at the Chillicothe hospital.
Mr. Shy became ill about 6 o'clock yesterday evening, shortly after returning to his home from his office.
He was a member of the Methodist church; a past master of A. F. and A. M. 89; member of the Kiwanis club; a member of American Legion Post No, 25 and of the Livingston County Bar Association. He had served prosecuting attorney of Livingston stone County and as city attorney.
Mr. Shy was born on June 30, 1888, at Black, MO, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Shy.
He was a graduate of high school and Southeast Missouri State College, Cape Girardeau. He received his LLB degree in law at the University of Missouri in 1920. His college work was interrupted by World War I. He entered the service and served 14 months overseas as a lieutenant.
When he returned from overseas, he married Miss Pauline Kenower on Aug. 3, 1920, at Breckenridge. Mr. and Mrs. Shy resided in Breckenridge from 1920 to 1927 and Mr. Shy practiced law there. In 1927 they moved to Chillicothe and have resided here since that time.
During World War II, 1942-1946, Mr. Shy served in the infantry in Africa, Sicily and Italy. He retired as a colonel.
Survivors are his widow of the home, 1403 Calhoun street; two sons, Joseph Shy, Jr, Chillicothe, and Paul Shy, Kansas City, and a daughter, Miss Barbara Shy, Kansas City. He also leaves three brothers, Bert Shy, Campbell, MO; H I Shy, and L R Shy, Black; three sisters, Mrs. Cora Stevens, St. Louis; Miss Florence Shy, Black, and Mrs. W W Wood, Panama Canal Zone, and seven grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church with Dr. Carl A. Bergsten, officiating. Interment will be in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The body of Mr. Shy will be taken from the Norman Funeral Home to the church at 12:30 o'clock Sunday to lie in state until 1:50 o'clock, at which time the casket will be closed and will not be reopened.
