- [S4011] Newspapers.com: Deaths of PREDER Margaret and William • San Pedro News-Pilot - Feb 1969, (Name: News-Pilot; Location: San Pedro CA; Date: 19 Feb 1969;), 5 FROM PORT AREA ON LOST PLANE.
A San Pedro office manager her husband and three associates are among 35 passengers aboard a DC3 airliner missing on a flight from Hawthorne Nev to Long Beach Airport.
According to a manifest of passengers of the Mineral Counties Airline, Mrs Margaret Preder office manager of the Newberry store, 940 Western Ave in the Park Plaza shopping center, was listed as being aboard the airplane. Her husband, William Preder, Mr and Mrs Paget, and Clarence Pinkham all associated with the administration also were listed aboard the aircraft.
Manager of Newberrys in Park Plaza, Daryll Carlson, said Mrs Preder had been office manager of the San Pedro store since it opened in April 1966. Paget at that time was food manager for the Holland House restaurant part of the Newberry chain and was promoted later to the district headquarters as manager. All five lived in Torrance, Carlson said.
According to news reports from Hawthorne Nev, ground parties, some on skis or snowshoes, battled rain and heavy snow today in their search for the missing airliner on a "gamblers flight."
We've got three good leads, said Col Clarence Brown of the Air Sea Rescue Service headquartered at Hamilton Air Base Calif. However he said all but two of 37 search planes remained grounded today by the weather. The clues came from persons who reported hearing the sounds of twin engines which suddenly stopped. At the Circle ranch near Dyer Nev, a cowboy said "I thought it was coming right through the house," Col Brown said. The leads placed the DC3, similar to the C47 which was the workhorse of World War II, in an area deep in snow around Mt Tom and Mt Montgomery on the California Nevada border, about 50 air miles from Hawthorne Nev, where it took off at 4:06 am Tuesday.
The plane was carrying 32 passengers and a crew of three. Most of the passengers were on the return leg of a flight that carries Southern California customers to a Hawthorne casino on an overnight $10 excursion plan, which includes air fare dinner and cocktails. The flight originated Monday night in Long Beach Calif where 14 persons boarded the plane including the five Newberry employes. Eighteen others were picked up later at Burbank, where they were due to return at 6:30 am Tuesday. The crew was identified as Pilot Fred Hall of San Fernando Valley Calif, copilot Ray Hamer of Long Beach, and Stewardess Pat Nannes.
The last report from Hall came 16 minutes after takeoff from Hawthorne, when he radioed his flight plan to Tonopah 100 miles south might have found a nice flat area to come down in, or they might have landed in one of our Alkali Lakes said airport manager Art Barlow. "These pilots are real good . . . They are the best in the business.
