- [S9935] Newspapers.com: Death (Murder) of POLITO Nicholas • St Louis Post-Dispatch - Aug 1982, (Name: St Louis Post-Dispatch; Location: St Louis MO; Date: 31 Aug 1982;), SON CHARGED WITH MURDER OF FATHER WHILE HE SLEPT.
Nicholas A. Polito IV was charged Monday with the capital murder of his father. Police say he admitted that he had shot him after coming home and finding that his dog had not been cared for. The younger Polito, 22, made the admissions to St. Louis County police in a taped statement shortly after his arrest.
The suspect's father, Nicholas A. Polito III, 54, was an insurance agent. He was shot to death Aug. 22 as he slept in the family's home at 10715 Kennedy Road in Sappington. His body was discovered the next morning by his daughter.
Police said young Polito had told them that he had shot his father after returning home on the evening of Aug. 22. He said he had discovered that his father had failed to feed and water the son's dog. Police said the incident appeared to represent the straw that broke the camel's back. Relations between the father and son had been strained for a long time, police said.
Polito was arrested about 4 p.m. at St. Louis County police headquarters, 227 South Central Avenue in Clayton. Police officials credited Detectives David Ventimiglia and Terry Boaz with having developed the information that led to the arrest. Polito was being held in the county jail without bond.
The younger Polito worked at Anthony's Imports Inc., a business operated by his mother. Ventimiglia said the investigation had focused on the son almost from the beginning. "Nothing had been taken from the home, so we were able to rule out robbery as a motive," Ventimiglia said. "So then we looked at the family.
There were some inconsistencies in his initial statements to us, so we were thinking of him as a suspect from the beginning." In his first statement to police, young Polito acknowledged that he had Nicholas A. Polito IV been at home that evening. But he said he had gone out later, police said. Police said Polito told investigators that he had hidden the weapon used in the killing, a .32-caliber pistol, in a home in Creve Coeur. Police are seeking a search warrant to look for the pistol.
