Stones River National Cemetery, Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee, USA

Notes: Stones River National Cemetery was one of the first national cemeteries built to honor the dead of the Civil War. It was established in June 1865 and completed in October 1866.

Originally built to bury the dead from the 1862 Battle of Stone River, three thousand souls were found who had died in battle or in local county hospitals from wounds received. Once that was accomplished, the search expanded as far as 80 - 90 miles in all directions. Six hundred soldiers remains were located in places like Hoover's Gap, Liberty, and Guys Gap. Dead were located along the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad line and the dead from the Battle of Franklin, (Nov 1864) were located and reburied at Stone River; total of 6124 civil war interments, including 2307 unknown soldiers. Today there are soldiers and their dependents from six wars buried here.
