Investigation into the shooting was presumed to be continuing to day. Raymond Hooper claimed the shooting was accidental, that he was playing with the gun andJ it went off, the shell striking his uncle in the throat, Chief Balthrop stated. Chief Balthrop gave this account of the shooting based upon informa tion his officers have compiled so far; "Lewis Hooper purchased a .22 rifle yesterday from Terrace Williams and the two Hoopers went to Cumberland River bank to "try it out." Lewis Hooper, drank beer while they were there. Raymond Hooper claimed his uncle was drunk at the time of the shooting." The younger Hooper did not see his uncle again after they parted at the river until he went to their two-room house at about 9 pm last night. Meanwhile, Raymond met Clara Holley of New Providence, whom he identified as a "grass widow," and the two had beer before going to Hooper's home. Balthrop said Raymond Hooper did not know his uncle was at home then when he tried the door it would not open. He forced it open and entered, the woman following. Inside, Lewis Hooper registered an objection to his nephew bringing a woman home and the two men argued. That argument subsided but flared up again. Raymond Hooper picked up the rifle and began waving it around, during which it discharged, the bullet striking Lewis Hooper, who died almost instantly." Chief Balthrop said officers questioned the woman and said that she told them the shooting was "accidental." Notwithstanding, Raymond Hooper was arrested and booked at the City "jail last night on charges of murder.
