Notes: The original gate of Santa Fe National Cemetery, stamped *U.S. MIL. CEM 1868* up in its keystone, is still standing at the extreme south end of the grounds, which were given to the United States by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santa Fe at the end of the Civil War.
The first graves here "to the left/west of the arch" were to rebury 265 soldiers killed in battles at Glorieta, Pecos and Fort Marcy, New Mexico; first territorial Governor Charles Bent and 46 others removed from the Santa Fe Masonic Cemetery; and many soldiers who had served and died at southwest frontier outposts in New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah prior to the Civil War.
In 2001, the Navajo Code Talkers were presented with the Congressional Silver Medal, and many are buried here.
