Home-WALL Richard (Abington Friends)
Abington Meeting Friends -- The first Friends meeting in this area was held in the home of Richard Wall in 1683. That house in Elkins Park is now a Cheltenham Township Park house and can be visited. Through the gift of John Barnes, the present grounds were acquired in 1697 for the use of a meeting house and school. The first meeting house was completed in 1702 and rebuilt in 1786 with additions made in 1797, 1929 and 1966. Abington Frineds School is under the care of the Meeting with classes from pre-school through 12th grade. George Burson and his wife Hannah were early members of this Meeting house after their immigration from England to America in 1684. Burson was a member even though he was disavowed for following the tenants of George Keith in 1692. Burson was later reinstated in the Abington Friends Society.
