As Katherine's father died right after he was knighted, he never had a chance to have his own coat-of-arms. John of Guant designed this for Katherine for her loyalty to his first wife, Blanche. Katherine took care of Blanche until she (Blanche) died of the plauge. Supposedly John and Katherine had not begun their romance at this time.
