Historical Marker-John Craigs Fort
Tennessee Historic Marker - Maryville, Blount County, TN John Craig's Fort Site of the original settlement of Maryville. Here Captain John Craig in 1785 erected a fort on Pistol Creek to protect settlers from Indian raids. In 1793 as many as 280 men, women, and children lived within its walls for several months, surviving an attack by 500 Indians. New Providence Presbyterian Church was organized here in 1786 by the Reverend Archibald Scott. Note: As of 8/13/2014 I have not been able to prove or disprove that John Craig of Limestone, County AL and the John Craig of Blount County, TN are one and the same. In his Revolutionary War pension application the John Craig of Limestone, AL does not mention Blount County however he does refer to Greene County, TN. In 1785 this area would have been a portion of Greene Co., State of Franklin. In 1786 The State of Franklin created Blount Co but the county was dissolved with the end of the State of Franklin.
