Ship-SS Karamania
The 3,148 GRT steamer Karamania was launched in 1882 at the D&W Henderson shipyards in Glasgow for the Barrow Steamship Company. She was subsequently purchased by Henderson Bros. in 1891 before being acquired by the Anchor Line in 1899. The Anchor Line's SS Karamania was detained under quarantine in San Francisco on March 10th, 1903 after 6 strange deaths were reported. The health inspector concluded that the casualties, who were all buried at sea, must have died from cholera. The remaining 733 passengers stayed in lock-down until the entire ship had been sanitized and deemed free from infection. This was the second such incident for the Karmania, who had been placed in quarantine on August 3rd, 1893 due to 3 reported deaths from cholera. After a 20 year career, she was broken up in Marseille in December of 1904.
