Alfred Edgar Distelhurst was born on October 14, 1890, in New York City, the son of Hugo Distelhurst and Frances Van Dusen. He was the brother of Helen, Frank and Paul.
He married Amanda Firux and had two sons, Alfred Edgar Jr., and an infant who passed away at the age of two days. He and Amanda stayed married until her death in 1926.
He later married Ruby Hamilton. They had two daughters, Dorothy Ann and Martha Jane.

Dorothy's story gained national attention, and although there was a spotlight on her case, her killer was never caught.
Nine years later, his son Alfred Edgar Jr. was killed in World War II.
