First Governor of Maryland. Son of George Calvert, the First Lord Baltimore, he left Cowes England with the Ark and Dove on November 23, 1633 with his brother George and about three hundred colonists. On March 25, 1634 they made landfall at St. Clement's Island in Maryland and was declared governor by order of his brother, Cecilius, second Lord Baltimore. He established the seat of government at St. Mary's City in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He was made commander-in-chief of all armed forces by land and sea on April 15, 1637 and was made chief magistrate with large power and could grant patents for lands and designate port of entry and markets. When the English war in the 1640's came to Maryland he fled to Virginia where he controlled Maryland's armies. Propriety was restored in 1647 and he returned. He died shortly after returning to Maryland and although it is believed he is buried in the chapel field in St. Mary's County it is not known for sure.
