Harley L Monroe, 76, of Sullivan, passed away Oct. 13, 2002. He was born May 27, 1926, to Leroy R and Gladys H (Merry) Monroe at Mount Hope, Wisconsin. He attended college in Wisconsin for three years and then entered the military. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II. After his discharge, he finished his fourth year in college at Rolla School of Mines completing his bachelor's degree in engineering. On Nov 21, 1953, he was married to Alberta Hood in Flat River at Taylor Avenue Methodist Church. They celebrated 48 years of marriage. Harley and Alberta made their home in the Leadbelt area where he was employed by St. Joseph Lead. In 1961 they moved to Bourbon and in 1965 to Sullivan where Harley became superintendent of the former Meramec Mining Company. He remained in that position until retirement. Mr. Monroe enjoyed spending summers, in his native Wisconsin, traveling to the East and West Coast, fishing and golfing. He was a family man and was very proud of having served his country. Harley was a 50-year member of the Sullivan Masonic Lodge 69 A.F.and A.M. and 50-year member of the Scottish Rite. He was also a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Bourbon. He is survived by his wife, Alberta of the family home; two sisters, Virginia Miller of Genesco IL and Gwendolyn Blackburn of Fennimore WI; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A gathering of family and friends was held on Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Bourbon. Masonic services were conducted at the church with memorial funeral services following. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church. Arrangements were under the direction of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Alberta E. Monroe, 90, of Sullivan passed away at Missouri Baptist Hospital, February 15, 2007. Mrs. Monroe was born at Elvins on January 11, 1917 to the late Lawrence and Blanche (Woods) Hood. She graduated high school there and was united in marriage to Harley Monroe on November 21, 1953 at what was then known as Flat River. They made their home in Sullivan where Alberta became involved with the Ladies Auxiliary at the local hospital and Order of Eastern Star. Alberta was also a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Bourbon. Survived by: Two half-brothers, Fred Goad and wife Carol and Jim Goad and wife Ruth, of the lead-belt area; other relatives and a host of friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to First United Methodist Church of Bourbon in the name of Alberta and Harley Monroe.
