- [S9869] Newspapers.com: Death of Wanda Arvin • Kentucky New Era - 22 Feb 1968, (Name: Kentucky New Era; Location: Hopkinsville KY; Date: 22 Feb 1968;), CITY WOMAN KILLED - SPEEDING GETS BLAME FOR HIGHWAY FATALITY.
Excessive speed has been blamed for a car-truck collision on US 41 about 35 miles north of the city which claimed the life of a Sanderson Drive woman at 4:40 pm Wednesday.
Witnesses told State Trooper Dan Carter that the car operated by Mrs Wanda Gail Sanderson Arvin, 26, was traveling south at a high rate of speed when it went out of control in a curve just south of the Shady Oaks Motel.
The car ran off the roadway on the west side, traveled 84 feet before hitting a guard post, traveled another 151 feet down the shoulder of the road before coming back onto the highway. The auto continued for another 105 feet along the highway and into the northbound lane of the highway.
Trooper Carter said the auto collided headon with a tractor-trailer truck operated by Quincey J Gilbert Sr, 47, of Atlanta Ga. The collision was seven feet east of the center line.
Gilbert who was taken to Jennie Stuart Hospital for treatment of a scalp cut, said he saw the Arvin auto coming in his direction and was attempting to pull to the side of the road. The impact knocked the car backward for 58 feet. It struck a concrete bridge abutment tearing loose the abutment and sending it and the car into the creekbed 10 feet below. The cab of the truck also plunged over the embankment. The trailer which contained a 26000-pound load tottered over the edge threatening to topple onto the tangled vehicles below. It did not go over the embankment, however.
A third vehicle WHOP Radio’s news van joined the wreckage when its occupant got out at the scene. The vehicle was apparently left out of gear and rolled down the embankment partially on top of the Arvin auto. The third vehicle was not extensively damaged. It was unoccupied at the time.
A passenger in the Gilbert Truck 35-year-old Royce W Beck of Atlanta escaped injuries. Mrs Arvin was alone in her vehicle. There were no seat belts in either the car or truck. Both were demolished.
Christian County Coroner Luton Tatum said Mrs Arvin died instantly of a broken neck. The road was blocked intermittently for nearly four hours as efforts were made to clear the wreckage.
Mrs Arvin was the fifth traffic victim of the year in Christian County, the second in three days. The 1968 count is now two ahead of the record pace set in 1967 when a total of 41 persons died in county accidents. Wednesday’s crash was the first fatal mishap of the year on U S 41-N.
Services will be at 2 pm Saturday at Henninger Funeral Home. The Rev Paul Sullivan pastor of Edgewood Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Memorial Gardens.
A native of Michigan Mrs Arvin had been living in this community for about a year and had lived here on previous occasions. She was born Sept 19, 1941.
Mrs Arvin was employed as a waitress at the Coach and Four.
Survivors include her parents, Mr and Mrs Vernon Sanderson, with whom she made her home at 609 Sanderson Dr, four young children, Richard 9, Kenneth 7, Justine 5, and Cynthia 2, and a sister Mrs Charles North, this city.
