Silver Star Citation: "The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lindsay C. Turner, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company E, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Early on the morning of 10 August 1969, During Operation IDAHO CANYON, Private First Class Turner's platoon was occupying a night defensive position approximately eight miles northwest of the Vandegrift Combat Base when they suddenly came under an intense ground attack from a reinforced North Vietnamese Army company employing grenades, explosives, and small arms. In he initial moments of the assault, the enemy penetrated the Marine perimeter, overran several positions near Private First Class Turner's and inflicted heavy casualties among the Marine defenders. As a result of the enemy penetration, Private First Class Turner was the only man left in his area who was still able to fire against the advancing hostile soldiers. Although wounded in the neck and shoulder by grenade fragments, he steadfastly defended his tenuous position until the enemy began to withdraw. He then left his fighting hole and started moving seriously injured Marines to the platoon aid station. While thus engaged, Private First Class Turner was mortally wounded by fragments from a hostile mortar round which impacted near him. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the defeat of the enemy attackers. By his courage, resolute determination and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Turner upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
