A Rockland man was killed Thursday and three members of his family were Injured in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Routes 17 and 206 according to a Maine State Police dispatcher.
Michael Stanley 30 of Rockland died from his injuries the dispatcher said. The driver of the 1984 Cadillac in which Stanley was a passenger was Lawrence Stanley 56 of Rockland. Lawrence Stanley and passengers Shirley Stanley 58 also of Rockland and Kip Stanley 33 of Waldoboro were injured in the crash. It is believed the three injured people were taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center, but a nursing supervisor indicated that not all of them were seen.
The Injured people who did go to the Rockport hospital were treated and released she said. The 1:12 pm crash occurred when either Stanley’s brakes failed or he failed to stop at a stop sign and was hit by a 1997 Dodge pickup truck driven by Matthew Farrington 38 of Vassalboro. The dispatcher did not know whether Farrington had any passengers.
Initial reports indicate that speed alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash the dispatcher said, although blood tests were done because it involved a fatality. It is not yet known whether the Stanleys were wearing seat belts but Farrington was wearing one the dispatcher said.
State police are examining Stanley’s vehicle to determine whether there was a mechanical failure the dispatcher said, and the accident also is being reconstructed. The crash is still under investigation by Trooper Patrick Hood

Shirley A. Stanley, 65, died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following a brief illness.
Born in Stonington, April 5, 1945, she was the daughter of Clifford L. and Myrtle M. Stinson Stanley. At the age of five, she moved to Rockland with her family, where she attended local schools.
Shirley was a devoted mother, who considered her greatest vocation raising her two boys. She enjoyed family gatherings and doing crossword puzzles. She attended the Rockland Congregational Church.
She worked at area fish processing plants; as a housekeeper at the Samoset Resort; at JC Penney in Rockland; and the former Sprowl's Laundry and Chickadee Laundry.
Other than her parents, Shirley was pre-deceased by one son, Michael James Stanley, September 11, 2003; three brothers, Russell L. Stanley, Charles L. Stanley, John A. Stanley; two sisters, Norma Cantara and Phyllis Hayes in 2003.
She is survived by one son, Kip Stanley of Cushing; two sisters and their husbands, Patricia A. Harper and Sheldon of Thomaston, Ethylen D. Philbrook and Maynard "Buddy" of Cushing and one brother, Lawrence W. Stanley of Rockland; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 22, 2010 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, at Village Cemetery, Sunrise Section, Dwight Street, Thomaston. The Reverend Seth D. Jones will officiate.
