Rev John White - Religious Figure.
He is remembered, as a Puritan Englishman, for being a supporter of settling the “New World” of America in Massachusetts. Although he never came to Massachusetts himself, he arranged funding for the ships and settlers. His nephew, Thomas Gardner, Jr. was given charge of the first attempt in 1623. After several aborted attempts from failed crops, disease, and combative Native Americans between 1623 and 1626, he organized yet another forty colonists to sail from England on June 20, 1628 to Nahum Keike, which would later become Salem, Massachusetts. This time they were successful. This group later merged into the Massachusetts Bay Company by 1629. The Rev. White was the rector of St. Peters Church in Dorchester, Dorset and Holy Trinity in Dorchester, and known for his church involvements and civic leadership, hence considered the Patriarch of Dorchester. He wanted to stop the poverty caused by being uneducated, unemployed and widespread alcoholism. He had a vision of settling the “New World” living in a near-perfect English society with free schools, church-controlled alehouse, and a higher standard of living. He wanted the Puritans to have freedom of worship and be separated from the Church of England and Roman Catholics. For his attempts in settling Massachusetts, he was given the name “the Father of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.” He played a big part in selecting those who would govern this new colony. On May 11, 1629, three more ships with 300 carefully-chosen colonists and two ministers left England for the “New World.”
