Sheriff G.E. (Galba Edward) Branson, was shot and killed by three brothers at a picnic on the fourth of July, 1889 in Kirbyville, Taney County, Missouri. Also killed was U.S. Marshal Ed Funk.
The sheriff and the Marshal were trying to avoid a tragedy to befall citizens of Kirbyville. The three brothers had been drinking and were displaying weapons.
The brothers were Bill, James and Emanuel Miles.
The sheriff announced he would have to arrest the brothers, and that's when things got ugly.
After a shootout with Sheriff Branson and Marshal Ed Funk, the boys got away into the dense brush. The next day, 2 of the 3 brothers were captured. Emanuel was not located.
The sheriff and the Marshal both died at the picinic that Fourth of July 1889.
In a sensational trial in Sept 1890, both Jim and Bill Miles were found not guilty of the murder of these two lawmen.
