Joseph Harding, 38 years old, 628 Lynch street, was shot and killed shortly after noon yesterday in an alley near Third and Spruce streets by James J. Steffens, 2709 Shenadoah avenue, a private watchman.
Steffens is employed by the Carl Hirsch Army Supply Company, 800 Spruce street. According to his story to the police, he was in the alley supervising the loading of some wagons when he saw Harding take a tub of butter from the Johnson Butterine Company, 322 Clark avenue, and conceal it in a shed in the rear of 319 Spruce street.
Steffens went to the shed and arrested Harding, but the manager of the butterine company refused to lodge a complaint and Steffens released him. Later, Steffens said, while he was in the shed in the rear of the Spruce street number, Harding opened the door and started in. Steffens said he started towards Harding and the latter turned and fled. Steffens said he started in pursuit and fired two shots in the air to stop the fugitive.
