ERNEST H. PARKER, REGISTER, DIES.
Employe of Davidson County 40 Years; Long Ill; Rites Not Set.
Ernest H. Parker, 64, register of Davidson County, died at 7:25 o'clock last night at Madison Rural Sanitarium following an extended illness.
Reelected last year to his fourth term as county register, Mr. Parker began his fourth three year term last September 1, which also marked the beginning of his 40th year of service as an employe of Davidson County.
ONCE PURCHASING AGENT.
Beginning his public career in 1902 as chief deputy in County Judge Litton Hickman's office, he served in that capacity for 16 years. In 1918 he became county purchasing agent and was in that office for 12 years.
After rounding out a dozen years of service in the purchasing commission office, Mr. Parker then entered his first successful race for register and took office in 1930.
BORN NEAR GALLATIN.
Born in Sumner County, near Gallatin, in 1878, Mr. Parker's father died when he was but 11 years old. He then entered the Tennessee Industrial School from which he was graduated and then went to work for the old National Fertilizer Company, rising from the ranks of stenographer to bookkeeper and assistant manager. He went from that office to the county judge's office.
Mr. Parker was proud of his student years with T. I. S. and always took occasion to compliment this organization for its work.
During his term as county register he installed the re-indexing system which was brought about through help of the WPA. This is regareded as one of his outstanding accomplishments.
CHURCH LEADER.
Mr. Parker was a member of the Board of Deacons and treasurer of the Woodland Street Presbyterian Church; and secretary-treasurer of the Men's Bible Class. He was a member of the Nashville Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge, Mystic Shrine, Order of the Eastern Star, Junior Order of United American Mechanics, Woodmen of the World, the Daughters of America, and the Tribe of Ben Hur.
Survivors are his wife, the former Miss Lela Wooten of Nashville; sons, Ernest H. Parker, Jr., and Bill Wooten Parker; a grandson, Ernest H. Parker, III, all of Nashville; one sister, Mrs. Boude Dismukes of Muskogee, Okla.; two brothers, G. C. Parker, an attorney of Gladewater, Texas, and the Rev. L. L. Parker of Denton, Texas.
