John Gilmore was born between 1690 - 1703 (dates vary) in current Northern Ireland or possibly "Coleraine, County Londonderry" (seek source). The Gilmore family was native to Scotland. John and his wife Agness "Anderson" (seek documentation of maiden name) left N. Ireland. They are believed to have settled in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, a Scots Irish settlement, in the early 1730's. They purchased 500 acres in then Augusta Co., Virginia on 22 Nov 1746, in another Scots Irish Settlement, where others from Lancaster Co. also settled. It was then on "Tees" creek and was later renamed, Kerrs Creek, which became Rockbridge Co., Virginia, as it is today.
I understand that on 21 Nov 1745, John bought 500 acres on the north fork of Tees Creek from Benjamin Borden, Sr., in Augusta Co., Virginia Deed Book 1, p 220. Jerry & Joanne's Southern Connections list the source as Lyman Chalkey's book below, but it's not in Vol. 3, p 259, with the others. Chalkley skipped some records, maybe due to age.
