Sir Dudley North - 3rd Baron North, Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Sheriff of London 1682.
Son of Sir John North and Dorothy Dale. Grandson of Sir Roger Baron North and Winifred Rich, Dr Valentine Dale and Elizabeth Sherer.
Husband of Frances Brockett, daughter of Sir John Brockett of Brockett Hall, Hertfordshire. They were married about 1599 and had four sons and two daughters; Robert, Sir Dudley, Charles, John, Elizabeth and Dorothy, who married Richard Lennard, Lord Dacre, and Challoner Chute.
Dudley inherited from his grandfather when he was nineteen, was educated at Trinity College, Cambridgeshire, and a member of Parliament during the Civil War. He was known for his athletic abilities and well as poetry and music,a great friend of Prince Henry, the son of King James I.
Dudley became famous when in 1660 he discovered the chalybeate springs (mineral spring containing iron) at the Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells, where he was said to have cured himself of an ailment. Dudley had retired to the countryside in Kirtling due to his ill health, and discovered the springs during a walk in the woods.
Dudley's brother, Roger, led an expedition to Guyana, which Dudley supported, but when Roger left without leave, Dudley was imprisoned for two days in the notorious River Fleet Prison at London.
As Dudley was involved with lords in sympathy with the Commons, he found himself siding with the Parliament at the onset of the Civil War.
