Juriaen was born in the Westphalia area of present Germany. He was living in Leiderdorp when he left the Netherlands on the ship DeHoutwyn on June 6, 1642 and was one of twenty-four passengers bought to America by Killian Van Rensselaer to work his lands at Fort Orange (Albany, New York). Juriaen worked one of the three farms Killiaen had on Papscanee Island in the Hudson River, a short distance south of Fort Orange. Juriaen wed Marretje Hansen at Fort Orange in 1653. In 1654, Juriaen and others moved to the Esopus Creek area to establish a settlement. This was chartered by the Dutch as the city of Wiltwick in 1661.

Maria was the daughter of Hans Jansen Van Nordstrand, who wed Reymerig Volkert and lived at Nordstrand Island in present Germany. They had three children; Jan, Simon, and Marretje (Maria). Shortly after Marretje's birth in 1636, the family came to America and Hans took up farming at Amersfoort (Brooklyn) on Long Island. Reymerig died soon thereafter and Hans married Jannetje Van Leeuwen at New Utrecht, Long Island. They had seven children. Marretje was eventually bound out to a tavern keeper at Fort Orange (Albany, NY) and in 1653, at the age of seventeen, wed Juriaen Westfall.
In 1654, Juriaen and others moved to the Esopus Creek area to establish a settlement. This was chartered by the Dutch as the city of Wiltwick (Kingston, NY) in 1661.
