At the end of WWII, he was a Midshipman in the United States Navy, He was discharged following the conclusion of the war.
Funeral Services were held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nashville, and burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In addition, Janice is survived by two daughters, Karen and Kathy Blankenship; three grandchildren, Kristin Poppe, Evan (Ashley) Stamey and Katy Poppe, and one Nashville niece, Nancy Cartwright. She is also survived by four step-sons, Larry (Diane) Smith, Rand (Beth) Smith, Jeff (Ann) Smith and Marty (Pam) Smith, and thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren (Olivia & William Smith Olsen and Raleigh Fisher), whom she adored.

In addition, Janice is survived by two daughters, Karen and Kathy Blankenship; three grandchildren, Kristin Poppe, Evan (Ashley) Stamey and Katy Poppe, and one Nashville niece, Nancy Cartwright. She is also survived by four step-sons, Larry (Diane) Smith, Rand (Beth) Smith, Jeff (Ann) Smith and Marty (Pam) Smith, and thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren (Olivia & William Smith Olsen and Raleigh Fisher), whom she adored.
