Joan (Warnock) Thurber, 81, died Nov. 10, 2006, at a Belfast hospital.
She was born July 29, 1925, in Brattleboro, Vt., to Una (Winchester) and Henry Childs Warnock.
She attended schools in Marlboro and Brattleboro, Vt., and college at Massachusetts State, Amherst, Mass. She worked as a telephone operator for NET&T, before and after marrying Emerson James Thurber in 1945.
They, with their three children, were transferred to Fairfield in 1960 and eventually to Belfast in 1964. Joan's life was her family and she supported whatever they were doing as den mother, assistant Girl Scout leader, etc., as well as being on civic committees, including when she was fundraising activities chairman for the new Belfast City Park Pool.
After her husband's death in 1986, she joined the Waldo County Hospital Aid as a volunteer and earned more than 6000 hours in 16 years.
Joan is survived by two children, David and his wife, Donna Thurber, of Illinois and Denise and her husband, David Lindahl, of Northport; grandchildren, Jennifer Thurber, Christopher Thurber, Jeffrey Thurber, Chelsea (Thurber) Shull and her husband, Nick, and Andrew Thurber, all of Illinois, Darci (Lindahl) Curtis and her husband, Richard, of Jackson, Michael E. Dusoe and his wife, Melissa, of Chelsea, Nathan Dusoe and Matthew Dusoe, both of South China; great-grandchildren, "Mikey" and Mitchell Dusoe of Chelsea and Morgan Curtis of Jackson, Amanda Thurber of Illinois and Kylie Faith Shull of Illinois; and several nephews and their families.
In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by two sisters and one brother, as well as her husband in 1986; and a daughter, Deborah Thurber Caruso in 2004.
Visitation for family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Young Funeral Home, 31 West Main St., Searsport. A graveside memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grove Cemetery, Belfast, with the Rev. David Abbott officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Marlboro Historical Society, Marlboro, VT 05344, which is now located in Joan's home and where her mother and brother wrote the second history of Marlboro, or the Town Line Animal Shelter, Belfast, ME 04915 or the Ronald McDonald House of Portland, 250 Brackett St., Portland, ME 04102. Her motto-"love others – help others."
