Funeral services for John Lewis O'Neal, 13, who was fatally hurt in a bicycle-automobile accident on Highway 41-A in front of Camp Campbell, late Friday night, were held Sunday afternoon. Services were held at the McReynolds Chapel with Dr. Richard N. Owen officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Classmates served as pallbearers. They were Tommy Grizzard, Homer Pruitte, Jr., Billy Slate, Billy Frank Hicks, Dick Wyatt, Chester Corder, Lewis Rushing, Fred Davis. Dr. Owen read Psalm 23 and selections from John. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Hicks sang "Asleep in Jesus," "Open the Door for the Children" and "Gather Them In" at the chapel. At the grave in Greenwood Cemetery they sang "God Will Take Care of You," There was a large attendance and a beautiful floral offering.
The youth was riding his bicycle to a store in front of the army post when his car was struck by an automobile, driven by Herman LeLe Gilliam, 17. State Highway Patrol Cpl. Lee Wood said that Gilliam told him the boy drove across the highway in front of his car and that he couldn't stop in time. Gilliam was accompanied by Miss Mary Anne Poindexter of Hopkinsville. The boy died en route to Camp Campbell Hospital.
Surviving the youth are his mother, - Mrs. Beulah Bartee Coones, Camp Campbell, with whom he lived; his father, Oliver J. O'Neal, Woodlawn; his paternal grandfather, Arthur O Neal; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Bartee, Woodlawn; maternal great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Poster, and paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Alice O'Neal.
The boy was a sixth-grade student . . .
