Wilfred A. Bunker, 92, died Dec. 29, 2012, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born July 14, 1920, in Bar Harbor, the son of Henry A. and Alta I. (Spurling) Bunker. He graduated from Patten High School, Patten. After high school he started working with his cousin, Edgar Bunker, delivering mail and providing passenger service to the islands. He served as a merchant mariner during World War II. When he returned home, around 1950, Wilfred and Clarence Beal founded Beal & Bunker, passenger service and mail delivery. He worked on the water for 52 years, retiring from the sea in 2002, but still remained active in the business up until his death. Wilfred was one of the founding members of Cranberry Isles Volunteer Fire Department. He served as chairman of the selectman for many years; he also served on the school board committee for 25 years. He was a member of Rock Bound Grange, Islesford, Trenton Grange and Mount Desert Island Lions Club. He is survived by his beloved wife, Louise B. (Miller) Bunker; one son, David A. Bunker and partner, Wendy Rackliff, of Cranberry Isle; and one daughter, MaryAnne Young and husband, Joe, of Swans Island; a son-in-law, Paul DePalmer of Portland; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and five stepchildren. Wilfred was predeceased by his daughter, Joyce DePalmer; his first wife of 38 years, Norma Stanley; his second wife of 26 years, Olive Bunker; and seven sisters and brothers.
