- [S4007] Newspapers.com: Death of Mary Edwards • Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle - Apr 1986, (Name: The Leaf-Chronicle; Location: Clarksville; Date: 6 Apr 1986;), INVALID DIES IN HOUSE FIRE.
An elderly invalid perished in a Saturday morning fire that engulfed her home before firefighters could arrive to extinguish the blaze. Mary Anna Edwards, 85, Route 1, Box 118, Shiloh-Canaan Road, in Palmyra, died shortly after 8am. The position of her body indicated that Mrs Edwards lifted herself from her bed into her wheelchair to escape the fire. She was found in the wheelchair next to her bed.
Mrs Edwards' granddaughter, Paula Nightwine, 22, and her young son, Wesley, escaped the burning house without injury by kicking out a bedroom window, said Montgomery County Sgt Milan Lewis. The fire was reported at 8:22 said Lewis. The Cunningham Volunteer Fire Department was notified and responded with 11 firefighters, assisted by six firefighters from the Montgomery County Rescue Squad, said Cunningham District Chief Robert Foulks. "Upon our arrival the house was fully engulfed, in said Foulks, The medium-sized wooden frame house burned quickly, said Lewis. "There was nothing we could do," said Foulks.
The fire was brought under control within about one hour; said Foulks. The body was removed 30 to 45 minutes later. Reports indicated that Ms. Nightwine's youngster woke her up, alerting her to the danger. She broke out the bedroom window and escaped with her son.
"It's a miracle they got out," said Lewis. Mrs. Edwards son-in-law, Scott Dupree who resides in a trailer behind the house, awoke and saw the house engulfed in flames, said Lewis. His efforts to help the elderly woman were fruitless. "When he got there, the house was so engulfed, all he could see was the wheelchair," said Lewis.
Mrs. Edwards' son, Carney Edwards, who also lives there, had left the house between 7 a.m. and 7:30 am and returned to see his home on fire, said Lewis. Although the cause of the fire still is under investigation, the evidence indicated it started in the living room, said Lewis. Mrs Edwards' bedroom was adjacent to the living room.
