Leslie Willis Brewer, 85, died Saturday, October 7 in Boothbay Harbor.
Born June 15, 1915 in Southport, he was the son of Willis Edmund and Florence Belle Hanna Brewer.
In 1934 he married Dorothy Alley and together they made their home in Southport for over 65 years.
He was a commercial fisherman, fishing out of Cozy Harbor all of his life. He specialized in stop seining but also worked at lobstering, tuna and shrimp fishing. In 1970 he invented the first successful shrimp trap.
He was an avid hunter who especially loved fox hunting. He enjoyed ice fishing on the lakes of Maine and catching sea trout in Florida. During World War II he caught the biggest single catch of herring; 30,000 bushel, for that time period. For many years he loaded herring on the Sylvina Beal, a sardine carrier, now refitted as a pleasure boat docked in Boothbay Harbor.
Mr. Brewer loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed his coffee at Gus's, vegetable and flower gardening and cutting his own wood by hand.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Alley Brewer; two son, Donald Brewer Sr. and his wife, Nora, Peter Brewer and his wife, Linda of Southport; one daughter, Sandra Thibault and her husband Edward; one brother, Alvin Brewer, all of Southport; grandchildren, Leslie W. Brewer, II, Donald Brewer Jr., Maynard Brewer, Jessica Brewer, Martin Thibault and Matthew Thibault all of Southport, and Chris Abaldo of Thomaston, Amy Durham of Bermuda and Betsy Thibault of Alburg, Vermont; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Monday, October 9 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall, Route 27, Boothbay.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Brewer's memory may be made to the Fisherman's Memorial Fund
