- [S4152] Obituary of Josiah Payne - Colorado Citizen - 3 Dec 1925, (Name: Colorado Citizen; Location: Colorado County TX; Date: 3 Dec 1925;), DR. PAYNE SUCCOMBS TO WOUNDS.
Death claimed the suffering racked body of Dr.J.H. Payne whose condition was told of in these columns last week, at about ten o'clock last Thursday morning.
Since the shooting he had been under the constant care of his children and friends, and at times seemed to be conscious of all that was going on .At one of these intervals he told the boys that he had done a "bad job" but that it would soon be over. His left side appeared to be paralyzed and it was difficult for him to make himself understood. He assayed to write something that he was not able to say and made a fairly clear copy.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at three o'clock Friday afternoon, Rev.M.L. Darby conducting, assisted by Rev.Geo.W. Keeling. Interment took place at Odd Fellows Rest where the Knights of Pythius burial service was solemnized. Dr.W.W Gunn, Chancellor Commander, took the leading part and Mr.W.H. Lawless, Prelate of the Lodge, the responses and invocation.
Dr.Payne was born in Yalobusha County, Miss. on April 21,1852. He came to Texas in 1882 and was employed on the G.C.S.F. Ry. as telegraph operator. He studied Medicine in Memphis,Tenn.,in 1883 and 84,graduating from that college, and returned to Texas and practiced at Holland until 1907 when he moved to Columbus ,where he had lived ever since.
He served this county as our County Health Officer twelve years, resigning on account of ill health in March last year.
Dr.Payne had been married three times, to Miss Carrie Burke in Alabama in 1875, to Miss Virginia Vahlen in Mississippi in 1877 and to Miss Carrie Guynn in Columbus in 1907. He is survived by the wife and five children,Joe of Waco,Mrs.T.L. Hiner of this city,Henry of Divilla,Ross of Fort Worth and Douthitt of Haskel, to whom our sincere sympathy is extended.
