  [S6040] FindAGrave Old World, Jean “the eighth” Poingdestre. Jean (John) Poingdestre was born about 1504 on the Isle of Jersey. His parents were George Poingdestre and Girette Ahier. Like his father George, John was less politically prominent than their predecessors. He was constable of the parish and seigneur of the ancestral estate. He married into the Hamptonne family, another prominent island family. His wife was Mary de Hamptone, daughter of Hostes de Hamptone of the parish of St. Laurens. They were married about 1540. Because of his the position of his family, he did serve as an alternate jurat in 1526. Jean was probably the person who led his family from Catholicism to the new Calvinist faith. During the reign of Elizabeth, the churches of the island were stripped of their "popish" ornaments and many other chapels and priories were destroyed or converted to secular uses. These changes apparently wrought great stress in the island. The Poingdestre family however, emerged as champions of the new faith. Another effect of the Renaissance is noted for the first time during his life. It is the Latinization of the name Poingdestre to Poindextre or Poindexter. People of scholarly attainments Latinized their name, starting about this time, although the name would not be completely changed for two more generations.
