Joseph Jerome Burkhardt, native resident of this city, died at his home 1301 North Main Street, last night at 6:19 o'clock. Death was caused by a malignant growth. He was 61 years old.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will be made in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Mr. Burkhardt was born in Edwardsville September 26, 1870, and was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Burkhardt. Mr. Burkhardt lived his entire life in this city. His marriage to Miss Nellie Smith took place at the St. John's Catholic Church in St. Louis on June 21, 1893. He followed the occupation of brick mason.
On his birthday 31 years ago last Saturday, Mr. Burkhardt narrowly escaped death when the Glen Carbon brick kiln, where he was working, collapsed when struck by lightning. He was buried under the debris of the building for two hours before he was dug out. Several other persons were killed.
Besides his widow, he leaves three sons, Joseph Burkhardt, Jr., Arthur Burkhardt of this city and Chester Burkhardt of East St. Louis; two daughters, Miss Edna Burkhardt, Edwardsville; Mrs. Mildred Neutzling, Glen Carbon, and one step-brother, Joseph Schmidt, St. Louis. Three children and one brother preceded him in death.

Mrs. Nellie Burkhardt who has lived in this vicinity for the past 52 years passed away Thursday at 2:40 p.m. at the home of her son Alderman Joseph Burkhardt at 309 Locust street.
She was born July 6, 1874, in St. Louis and had attained the age of 74 years, 10 months and 26 days. Her husband, Joseph Burkhardt preceded her in death Sept. 29, 1931.
She is survived by three sons, Joseph and Arthur Burkhardt of this city, Chester of Bunker Hill; two daughters, Mrs. Edna Mulach of Worden and Mrs. Mildred Neutzling of Glen Carbon and five grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and the Moose lodge.
Friends may call at the Schneider funeral home after 12 o'clock noon Saturday until Monday at 8:30 when services will be held from the funeral home and at 9 o'clock from St. Mary's Catholic church with the Rev. P.P. McGuinness officiating.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery.
The rosary will be said at the funeral home Sunday evening at 8:30 o'clock.
