News (Fatality)-COLLIER Gary (Murdered at Club)
Two employees of Talent South a company that provides security personnel for several topless clubs in Memphis are charged with second-degree murder in connection with the beating death of a California man at a topless nightclub. Robert Lafond, 31 of 3965 Bertram and Ira Woodfin, 31 of Collierville were to appear in General Sessions Court today. Gary Collier of Irvine Calif who was beaten early Saturday morning at Danny's, a topless club at 3450 Airways, died Monday night at Methodist Hospital. South Capt Clyde Keenan commander of the violent crimes squad said Collier's head apparently was slammed numerous times into a wall outside the club. Two members of the Iron Horsemen motorcycle gang who were initially taken into custody for questioning in the case were released. So were two dancers taken in as material witnesses. Police said one of the motorcycle club members was involved in having Collier thrown out of the club after the victim reportedly tried to fondle one of the dancers. However police said the mo torcycle club member returned to the club as Collier was being led away by the suspects. Police said Lafond was acting as shift manager at the club and Woodfin as doorman. Woodfin is a former manager of the Pink Garter Saloon, 3470 Airways. In September he was tried on obscenity charges because he was owner of record of the topless nightclub. After a testimony a mistrial was declared because several jurors indicated they had prematurely formed opinions in the case. In the same trial Danny Owens, owner of Danny's, testified he was the real owner of the Pink Garter not Woodfin. Owens said name had been used on the application because he did not think the Memphis Alcohol Commission would grant him a license. Owens owns several Memphis topless clubs. At the time Owens was protected from prosecution on misdemeanor offenses by an extradition treaty with Britain. Terms of the treaty were employed to return him to Memphis for federal prosecution in Nashville last summer. Owens was not convicted. • The Memphis Press-Scimitar • Memphis, Tennessee • Thu, Oct 27, 1983 • Page 28
