Arms-CAREW
A Welsh family of this name CAREW trace their descent from William Fitzgerald (died 1173), son of Gerald Fitzwalter. William's maternal grandfather was Tudor Mawr, prince of South Wales, and from him the family inherited the castle of Carru or Carrew near Prembroke, from which they took their name. A sizeable branch of the family is established in Ireland. This Welsh habitation name was from any of various minor places in Wales, so called from the Welsh words 'CAER' (fort) and 'RHIW' (hill). It is also possible that the surname in some cases may derived from the Cornish 'kerrow' which occurs seven times as a placename in Cornwall. CAREW is of Anglo-Norman origin. It is not clear at what date it was brought to Munster, where for several centuries, families of the name are recorded in County Waterford and County Cork. By the last century, most of the Carew families in Ireland were living in County Tipperary which is still the commonest. A notable member of the name was George Carew (1555-1629), Ist Baron Carew
