News (Fatality)-McNICHOLS Lula and Lee (Murdered by Dr Martin)
A plea of self-defense at the examining trial of Dr. H. E. Martin Friday on a charge of murdering his wife's parents was indicted today in a statement attributed to Martin by Sheriff Edwin France: "It was either him or me. I happened to be lucky." The sheriff said the 51-year-old physician made the statement 10 him shortly after the fatal shooting of Lee Grant McNichols, 58, owner of extensive farm lands in Christian county, and Mrs. Lula McNichols, 52, at the Martin home in nearby La Fayette Sunday. Although no charge was placed against her, Mrs. Martin, 31, the former Beulah McNichols, was under $3,000 bond to appear at her husband's hearing. The sheriff said Martin had expressed fear brothers of both the slain p;rsons might "try to get even" and had told him at the jail: "I am afraid please keep me safe and dont let anybody in to see me." •Messenger-Inquirer • Owensboro, Kentucky • 23 Nov 1937, Tue • Page 1
