Hayes Station Cemetery Edgehill Plantation, Clinton, Laurens County, South Carolina, USA
Notes: This is the site of the Hayes Station Massacre.
A monument was erected as a memorial to the event. According to a story in Edgefield Advertiser on 1 Jun 1, 1893, the monument had first been erected in 1875 but not long after had been destroyed by lightning, though the iron fence around the monument survived.
The current monument states that it was erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1810.
The memorial apparently was in a state of disrepair over the years. In 1921 an article was written in The Index-Journal of Greenville, South Carolina regarding the ruins of the monument as well as a story about the incident.
The memorial was on private land until 1970, when the owner of the property deeded an acre of land around the monument to the Laurens County Historical Preservation Commission.
We make every effort to document our research. There is a lot of information that I do not have, and I know there are mistakes in this tree. My feelings will not be hurt if you give me corrections or additional information, especially if you can provide sources for the information.
