Our Family's Journey Through Time
Andrew married Mary Mariah Deaver in 1828 in Haywood County, North Carolina, where Amanda and Daniel were born. In 1834, they moved to Georgia where Nathan and William were born. About 1840, the family moved to Saline County, Arkansas, where Sarah, Andrew, and James were born.

In 1849, Andrew, along with his son Daniel, and son-in law Benjamin Wills, traveled to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where they took a riverboat to New Orleans, a ship to Panama where they crossed the Isthmus to board another ship to San Francisco. Then, they took a stagecoach to Indian Gulch in Mariposa County. Andrew was so impressed, he returned home to get his family.
In 1852, Captain Andrew Cathey was master of a wagon train of 20 wagons, with several families including Catheys, Wills, Rowlands, Hammonds, and others on a perilous 9-month journey from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Mariposa County, California. Along the route, they witnessed Indian Massacres. They had to take apart their wagons to build rafts to cross the Rio Grande.
In California, they founded Catheys Valley, where they donated land to build a church, school, and cemetery. Their youngest son, John, was probably the first child born in Catheys Valley.
The town of Cathey's Valley in Mariposa County, California is named for Andrew.
